PDX Beer Week

Celebrating the city with the most breweries in the world, PDX Beer Week is a great way to explore all that Portland has to offer within its unique craft beer community. It’s the first annual Portland Beer Week, bringing even more craft beer goodness to summetime. In its inaugural year, the week’s events include special tastings of a beer created just for Portland Beer Week (Widmer’s Rose City Hipster, a golden ale brewed with rose hips), several specialty beer ice creams from Salt & Straw, the Brewers Burger Brawl at the Hop & Vine, beer and food pairings with treats from Spirit of 77 and the Grilled Cheese Grill, and the world premier of “The Love of Beer,” an insider’s look at the ladies behind regional craft beer.

Head to the PDX Beer Week kick-off party that is taking place on Friday, August 19th at the Horse Brass Pub to meet the folks behind the week-long party! Hotel Modera has also put a short list together of a couple of the events taking place during PDX Beer Week.

The first annual PDX Beer Week is proud to to present the World Premiere of Alison Grayson’s documentary on women in the craft beer industry. More than two years in the making, the film examines why women, a small segment of the craft beer industry, do what they do from their everyday lives to their struggles in work. It’s not for feminism or equality, it’s for “The Love of Beer.”

This will be an event you won’t want to miss. Much more than the first screening of the documentary, it will also feature a panel of special guests, including subjects of the film Bend Brewing Brewmaster Tonya Cornett; Sarah Pederson, owner of famous North Portland bottle shop, beer bar, and pasty tavern Saraveza; Founder of the Pink Boots Society Teri Fahrendorf; and Deschutes Brewing’s Veronica Vega. All of the panelists will be speaking about the film and their experiences in the industry, and the session will be MC’d by the Beer Goddess herself, Lisa Morrison. It all starts at 7:30 pm when the doors open for drinks and a meet-and-greet, followed by the panel discussion on-stage at 8:30 pm and the roughly 75 minute documentary premiere at 9:00 pm. Bagdad Theater is only 10 minutes away from Hotel Modera.

Organic Beer & Bacon Pairing

When: 2 pm – 5 pm Sunday, August 21st
Where: Grain & Gristle
Address: 1473 ne prescott, Portland, OR 97211
Website: www.grainandgristle.com

When asked to put together an event for PDX Beer Week, local beer writer and organic beer proponent Abram Goldman-Armstrong didn’t want to do a standard beer event. “Portland beer sage Fred Eckhardt once conducted an “organic beer and junkfood pairing,” says Goldman-Armstrong. “With that inspiration, I decided to pair organic beer and bacon. All too often organic beer gets pigeon-holed as “health food,” pairing organic beers with bacon is a little decadent, a little fun and a whole lot of delicious. We’ve got quite the gamut of styles from chocolate stout and Irish Red Ale to Belgian Farmhouse, American strong ale, to the traditional breakfast beer of Bavaria, hefeweizen.” Grain & Gristle is about 10 minutes away from Hotel Modera.

Brewing Class

When: 3 pm – 7 pm Sunday, August 21st
Where: Portland U-Brew & Pub
Address: 6237 SE Milwaukie Ave., Portland, OR 97202
Website: www.portlandubrewandpub.com

It’s $35 a person, and couples receive 10% off. Customers help during every step as they brew a beer for the pub. In a couple of weeks you can come back to the pub and have a pint that you helped create! The class is being offered only 10 minutes away from Hotel Modera.
